LIGHTING MASTER PLAN IN CHINA AT THE SERVICE OF LEISURE & NATURE
Situated in the western part of Hangzhou, Xixi National Wetland Park is a rare urban wetland with rich ecological resources, natural landscape and profound culture. It is the first and only Wetland Park in China combining urban life, farming and culture. It aims at becoming the number one natural leisure & touristic destination in China.
The Xixi NWP offers a unique range of opportunities that we explored to achieve an outstanding lighting masterplan for the areas of the Yangshang river, between the “Xixi bridge”, and the “Successful bridge” (127 000sqm).
Xixi Lighting Plan ACTLD Xixi Lighting Plan
Our concept design was focused on several layers, from the landscape to the architecture, through all the leisure areas. This was as much a lighting design masterplan as it was a darkness design masterplan, where we carefully examined what should be lit and what should stay dark. The concept was marked by the crucial need to unify the entire site in one global vision, common language and signature. After analyzing the site and delving into each area’s specificities, we applied a modern ecological approach binding genuine lighting poetry and technical solutions to provide a lasting experience for the visitors in view of the long term development of Xixi site.
“EXPERIENCE OF NATURAL SITE
Xixi experience is about leisure, natural scenery, history, culture and harmony between man and nature. Our aim was to provide outstanding, charming, elegant & calm atmospheres in order to promote a return to nature related to the future sustainable touristic development of Xixi Wetland Park.
The enhancement of XiXi atmosphere along with the highlight of its identity as a unique leisure destination, were conceived in respect of the surrounding environment and animal protection. We also kept human perception, safety and guidance in mind, by giving extra attention to illuminance levels, directions of light, light colors, positions, light sources and waste factors.

The water is the element that unites the entire experience of Xixi NWP. Applying our strong expertise to this key element, we used water as a mirror and an actor playing with the light in natural and human oriented sceneries.
“DEVELOPPING HARMONY, IDENTITY & ATTRACTIVENESS OF XIXI NWP
After the site visits, meetings with client, analysis, which pointed out the issues referring to Xixi development, we composed our master plan on 3 principal needs : creation of harmony, identity and attractiveness of Xixi Wetland Park. In the general master plan and architectural lighting system, we included enhancement of the rooftops, façades, bridges, using custom made lanterns as a key element, all along the site. In addition, we applied variables such as the lighting of the businesses and their signage and some hot spots. To ensure a perfect result, we also created and developed light art installations specially tailored and disposed in Xixi Wetland Park, as well as produced a light night show in Pagoda, to, above all, attract visitors on special occasions.
“Custom Made Lanterns
We provided the main areas with their own identity by adding custom made lanterns inspired by Xixi’s typical orange persimmon fruit. Created, developed and used overall the site in various ways, they expanded Xixi’s image and cohesion between all the areas and provided a unique atmosphere.

2) POETICAL, INTERACTIVE & ECOLOGICAL LIGHT ART INSTALLATIONS
Basing our creativity on the water element present in Xixi Park, we developed light art installations as a signature, but also as a subtle and poetical touch, such as enchanted plants playing with water and light. The installations were made in optic fiber integrated into surrounding environment, water and architecture. The dynamic installations react with the presence of the visitors by changing the colors and intensity to accompany the visitors in their journey and bring a magical atmosphere, as well as guidance and safety.

3) NIGHT TIME LIGHTING SPECTACLE

As another main attraction point, we used the Pagoda structure to program a lighting spectacle. Playing with water and trees, changing colors and intensity and supported by surrounding light installations and custom made lanterns and sound, Pagoda will offer romantic, warm or festive atmosphere designed for special occasions.

LIGHT, NATURE, ECOLOGY
While creating the best human experience for the visitors by ensuring their safety and guidance, we also needed to focus on protection of fauna and flora of the wetlands.
The ecological & sustainable approach of our lighting plan aimed at minimizing the carbon footprint, the disruption of the growth of local fauna, the threat to the migrating birds. It also includes the health effects of over-illumination or improper spectral composition on people, along with their wellbeing in the natural site by reducing the urban glow to enjoy the night sky.
Environment

Practical ecological solutions consisted in controlling the lighting system of the entire zone depending on the number of visitors, which ensured a low level of electrical consumption. We greatly reduced the amount of luxlevels on the floor to 5-10 lux only, favoring the lighting of the monuments, buildings and other vertical surfaces to create a safe and welcoming environment. Among several ecological technical solutions used in Xixi, the widespread use of LED’s systems helped to lower the intensity of the light to the only necessary needs, to cut down on waste of energy, while integrating the visitor to his surrounding environment.

Aeroville
We were called by the PCA I Philippe Chiambaretta Architecte Agency to develop a lighting design concept of the facades for the Aeroville shopping & office center complex, in a high traffic zone near Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. We created a contemporary, distinctive and functional lighting concept for the facades in order to increase the visibility of the complex from the road even during the day.
We proposed dynamic solutions integrated into the facades and specific lighting equipment to ensure a wide range of day time & night time effects. For the small facade we conceived the white LED strips installed in the most compact way, programmed individually and inverting colors to offer custom made remarkable effects. Dynamic and color changing festive lighting can be produced for Aeroville’s special occasions.

CORPORATE SHOW IN INDIA IN 5 STEPS
On September 10th Hero Motor Corporation held its corporate event to celebrate its turning point to the future, celebration of successes as selling 50 Million motorbikes and announcement of their new R&D city. Conferences, dance performances by Parkour 3Run, In-Senso, Quixotic and music pieces by India Philharmonic Orchestra, along with 3D projections & light shows were offered to 400 guests in New Delhi.
ACTLD with its partner Blue Square were commissioned by CPG Productions to produce the show from its concept design to the final realization. The main challenge consisted in a very short timeframe to conceive, design and build a temporary venue with 22 shipping containers (60x30meters) and tent structures. The main messages of Hero Motor’s values and a tribute on inspiring people were exposed on the videos. The public was submerged in a show, surrounded by the projection on the side wall combined with projection on the floor, which was elevated in a 3D structure.
