ACTLD NEWSLETTER 06-2014
THE OPENING CEREMONY OF “KING ABDULLAH SPORTS CITY
In June 2010, ACTLD won the international contest organized by the Comité Champs-Élysées to illuminate the most famous avenue in the world during Christmas period from 2011 to 2014. Together, the two creators of "Tree rings", Koert Vermeulen, founder & principal designer and Marcos Vinals Bassols, artistic director of ACTLD, seized this project with an open and fresh mind in order to renew one of the most traditional ways of filling Christmas with fascination.
We were honored to be the first Belgian lighting & visual company to be entrusted by the city of Paris to carry out this prestigious project and our festive light art installation “Tree Rings”, which successfully adorned the Champs-Elysées in Paris, became one of our best references next to “OVO”, “Le Rêve” and the “Youth Olympic Games in Singapore”.
Champs-Elysées
In the framework of this renowned project we ensured each crucial part of it including its artistic, branding and technical side. As artists, who created and conceived "Tree Rings" with our partners, Blue Square and Bis Lighting, we commonly agreed with the Comité Champs-Élysées that our light art installation should carry on to impress new audiences around the world thanks to its uniqueness and notoriety.
Today we have the pleasure to announce that our light art installation “Tree rings” is now officially available for purchase by a new prestigious collaborator in order to produce it in a new environment!

SCALABLE CONCEPT & NEW EXPERIENCE EACH YEAR
Throughout the years, we tried to take up this challenge with excellence, by elaborating a scalable concept, which combined innovation with a strong visual identity aiming to create memorable experience for the public by day & night. The most famous Parisian avenue was approached as a dynamic stage, creating in the end a unique experience of lighting spectacle for a potential audience of 500,000-600,000 people, during the holiday season.

On each of the 200 trees on the avenue, in the spirit of our modern creative approach, we installed three rings made of LED strip lights which symbolized the gathering and unity between people and nature. In 2011-2012 this basic concept was introduced along with an original dynamic lighting scenography and the mirror discs hanging on the branches of the tree, which reflected the light rays in all directions.

In 2012- 2013 not only we introduced a bright new set of colours and dynamic sequences to mark the different moments of the night and special occasions, but we also added a curtain of twinkling lights of 7 meters on the branches and LED up-lights in order to create a better perspective of the entire Avenue.

For 2013-2014 edition we elaborated totally new set of colors inspired by the latest trends focused on white, orange & mauve color schemes. We also programmed a new rhythm of the dynamic effects with a “long”, “medium” and “fast” tempo.

ECOLOGICAL APPROACH
Our project aimed at breaking with the past, not only through an original design, but also thanks to a innovative technical solutions making it the very first neutral energy lighting installation at the Champs-Elysées.

In its concept design, the light art installation “Tree rings” was based on our eco-conscious vision where we approached the tree as a living being, without infringing its space. We accomplished a durable and ecologically responsible project by the combination of specific technical solutions offered by the solar industry, with very simple geometric shape of the circle, as a symbol of gathering and union. Thanks to savvy use of eco-friendly LED features and solar energy from a photovoltaic farm, we reduced the energy consumption by almost 90 % compared to 2006.
ECOLOGICAL APPROACH
To take up this challenge and create lighting “haute couture” for the Champs-Elysees, Koert Vermeulen & Marcos Vinals Bassols focused on dynamic effects of the installation. All along the avenue, this lighting art sculpture around 200 trees with three LED rings each, in other words 600 LED rings, were installed, making this a total of 1.236.000 of LED RGB (red green blue), to which the curtain of of twinkling lights of 7 meters on the branches and LED up-lights were added.
CCE Tree Rings
Each ring is surrounded on the outside by a programmable RGB LED strip, which produces a glow of light. Inside the ring, a programmable high-brightness RGB LED strip illuminates the tree at 360°. The separate programming system via DMX, thanks to its perfect precision, gives an infinite number of possibilities to control dynamic color effects, intensity and rhythm of the light installation. Various color schemes and dynamic effects are created to enhance the avenue and to produce a surprise such as soft vibration, intense pulsation or even different colors and effects between the set of rings or between the two sides of the avenue.
Outstanding displays were created by two artists to bring the festive atmospheres for special occasions such as Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve.
THE STARS & OPENING CEREMONIES & MEDIA BUZZ
Every year, the Champs-Elysées, as a heritage site & commercial area, welcomes between 200 000 and 300 000 pedestrians a day. These figures increase to 500 000 - 600 000 pedestrians and tourists per day during Christmas time. Each year the big opening of the illuminations of “the most beautiful avenue in the world,” with its launch by famous actresses, along with the Mayor of Paris & city representatives, the Comité Champs-Élysées & sponsors, announce the Christmas season around hundreds of visitors.

Jean-Noel Reinhardt, President of the Comité Champs-Élysées said: “The combination of the artistic and environmental vision is what led us to choose ACTLD. The installation really makes sculptures out of each of the trees, which in effect turns the Champs Elysées into a 2 kilometers long art installation! With this LED technology, we have been able to go further in creating a dynamic scenography. Tree Rings as a real connection with the worlds of design, art and innovation”
