La Flèche Dans Les Nuages

“La Flèche Dans Les Nuages” illustrates the construction period of the spire of the Strasbourg Cathedral, between the XIV and XV century. A Story of passion following the steps of the great characters who marked that era. At that time the Place du Château is a gigantic construction site whose goal is to raise the spire above the Cathedral, to position the highest and most beautiful spire of Europe.

The public will (re)discover the different protagonists of this technical, artistic and human tale. The Spire is one of the most famous and admired architectural masterpieces of this era, assimilated to a miracle. It is the craziness of the Man that constantly pushes the limits of the spirit and the technique that brought the Cathedral to become an architectural icon of the Middle Ages.

Ulrich and Hultz are the two masters (Medieval architects) at the origin of the spire. But it is Hultz, surrounded by thousands of builders, who will realize this fabulous project. The Place du Château was the witness of one of the most extraordinary and ambitious projects of that time.

The builders cut the stone, forge the metal, develop the most innovative lifting engines and scaffolding until the extraordinary dream comes true: to raise the Cathedral ever higher until it reaches the sky with the tip of its spire.

Between symbols and poetry, “La flèche dans les nuages” explores the drawing techniques of the architect to his wildest dreams.
From dream to reality … The story follows the principal axes of the narrative:

– The spire from his first sketch to the technical drawings
– The dream of the architect, the aspiration of the man to surpass himself
– The builders of the Place du Château – individually and then as in ever increasing numbers
– The builders of the sky and the ascent of the stones to heaven
– A heritage forever engraved in the stone and in the sky

This year, for the first time, we moved the video projection from the walls of the Cathedral to the middle of the sky. We’ve designed an original structure consisting of a light mesh of 400m2 suspended above the Place du Château and on which will be projected the story of the spire and the men who built it.

We invite the public to look up to the sky, and live an immersive experience, an invitation to a dream, the very one that allowed the Spire of the Strasbourg Cathedral to reach the clouds.
